Amberlee Carter - For Rebecca
72 Views • Nov 07, 2014
Description
I sat on the steps
picking at
what light remained frozen
in the diamond cut cracks of cement
My sister went on
talking about her day
and I became lost
in the translations-
She had preached of God
then turned to a story
of her youngest child Eli-
I sat, enduring moments
without the heart to tell her
I would be leaving
this world of bibles and damnation behind
She had not noticed
her baby doll had grown up-
But she did see
a calling in me
when the wind rose up
scaring the birds from off their perch
atop the telephone wire-
She turned, her motherly face and said:
'love, you be sure to keep in touch....'
