Description

A sculpture of former South African President Nelson Mandela is unveiled at Howick, 90km south of Durban, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his capture by the apartheid police. Designed by artist Marco Cianfanelli, the unique sculpture is 10m tall and made from 50 steel columns anchored in concrete to symbolise the prison. As a young liberation fighter Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962, months after founding the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).
