Alison Cassidy - No Need for Words

lunching at Lilypilly
I find my eyes drawn to...

a gentle man, slightly stooped
(in his seventies, I would imagine)
with thick cotton-wool hair
and smooth olive skin
his military moustache
belying a soft voice
and faintly apologetic manner
he doesn't wear glasses

they always choose the same table
by the window
(obviously locals
everyone knows them)

he mumurs to the waiter
in a cultured voice
'Two chicken wraps, please Mat,
and our usual coffees? '

he smiles at his wife,
curled comfortably
like a dormouse
opposite, her dyed hair
(too dark) hiding her face
and lots of parcels at her feet

they sit together
companionably
every Tuesday
surrounded by warmth
and convivial chattering

they don't say much
there is no need for words
