Alison Cassidy - Goodbye Trevor

The Rug -
we always called him that,
from the day we first saw him
sitting behind the counter of his shop,
Super Natural Health Foods.

The Rug -
the name sort of stuck,
like the hideous
brown appendage
that covered his hairless pate.

The Rug -
not the greatest advertisement
for his biodynamic flour -
a Fred Flintstone look-alike
with sweaty hands.

He's been sitting behind that counter
for years
and losing money and customers
for years too,
as the Two Dollar shops take over.

The final crunch came last month,
when a mountain of pigeon shit
brought the ceiling down
heavily and expensively
on his bins of organic sultanas.

We took him a 'goodbye' card today
and his flaccid face
flushed pink.
He's looking for another job.
I don't suppose we'll see him again.
