Meeting with the kidnapper ended disastrously and Alan acquicses to the kidnapper's wishes to make a manuscript, in exchange for Alice's life. He makes his gruelling way back to the cabin with Barry Wheeler, who finally witnesses the Dark Presence's power. Coming to terms to the "rules" of the Dark Presence, Alan tries to write a new manuscript but is still suffering from writer's block.
