Traveling to their rented cabin, both of the Wakes take in the idyllic nature of Bright Falls. In his introspection, it's revealed Alan is suffering from a two-year long creative block and would rather not write anything after the success of his final novel in the Alex Casey series. Alice, however, had other plans, creating a rift within the couple. However, a mysterious, supernatural power has been observing them ever since they step foot on Bright Falls.
