Air strike kills 30 in Turkey
Description
Turkish warplanes killed at least 30 people in an air strike in south-eastern Turkey near the Iraqi border after apparently mistaking smugglers for Kurdish militants.
Fehmi Yaman, the mayor of Uludere in the Sirnak province, told Reuters there were 30 corpses at the scene.
He also said the incident "is unacceptable."
A comment on the incident from the national Turkish government was not immediately available but a security official said there had been rumours that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) would cross into the region.
The PKK, regarded as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, launches attacks on Turkish forces in south-eastern Turkey from hideouts inside the remote Iraqi mountains.
