AFGHANISTAN - Afghanistan: Census Impossible?

How many Afghans live in Afghanistan? The question sounds simple enough, but no one seems to know the exact number. Estimates of the population vary from 26 to 32 million people. The last census was conducted in 1979, before the Soviet occupation. In an attempt to gather accurate data, the Afghan government and the UN have now launched a new census. But in a country that is still at war, and where customs forbid women from speaking to strangers, this exercise is a daunting task.
