Description

This is the soldier accused of massacring 16 Afghan civilians.

He's been named as 38-year-old U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales.

No other details have been released.

He was expected to arrive at the Fort Leavenworth army base in Kansas on Friday where he'll be held in maximum security.

Bales has not yet been charged.

Commanding General David Rodriguez of U.S. Army Forces Command on Friday gave his reaction to the killings of mostly women and children.

SOUNDBITE: GENERAL RODRIGUEZ, COMMANDING GENERAL OF U.S. ARMY FORCES COMMAND, SAYING (English):

"It's a tragedy. We are disappointed that it happened and shocked, just like everybody else. We have a tradition of doing what's right and we'll do it in this situation too, as we find out and get to the bottom of this situation."

In a further sign of the damage to U.S.-Afghan relations, Afghan President Hamid Karzai is accusing the Pentagon of failing to co-operate fully with an investigation into the incident.
