My heart is pounding
And yet I feel not the work I am doing
Its funny
These people I never knew
Are screaming words of dissatisfaction at me
They tell me to give up and go home
They tell me to forget all I have worked for
One step at a time

Sweat rolls down my chest
It’s funny
Rather then giving in and listening
I laugh at these people
Their words encouraging me to push on
To prove them wrong
One step at a time


My muscles are tightening
This is it, the calm before the storm
I look down at this gray asphalt road
I’ve been here a thousand times before
And I’ll be here a thousand more
I'm at the edge of what defines can from can’t
I continue
One step at a time

A gentle breeze across my face
Where am I going?
I look up
I think of all I've done
How far I've come
My feet still going
One agonizing step at a time

My breath is coming in shorter bursts
This is pointless
Who cares how far I’ve come
Who knows what I've done to get here
No
There’s no stopping now
I do this for no other but my self
One step at a time

I’m at my brink
My body screams no
But my mind whispers yes
My shirt is soiled in sweat
I smile
This road, these challenges, my life
I take them all
One step at a time
