Activists under assault in Syria
Description
Amateur video out of Syria shows tanks on the streets of Homs amid the sound of gunfire.
The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows a building under attack.
Activists say Syrian tanks pounded an old district in the city killing three people.
More footage appears to show demonstrators shouting at solders from the doorway in a mosque. They seek refuge inside.
The attacks persist.
One man is injured.
Others seek to help him as gunfire echoes through the mosque.
Activists and residents say Syrian forces killed 40 civilians Friday in one of the bloodiest days of the seven-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
The United Nations says 3,000 people, including nearly 200 children, have been killed since the uprising began in March.
More footage out of Damascus shows a funeral march.
Since the start of protests in March, Syrian authorities have blamed the violence on gunmen they say have killed 1,100 soldiers and police.
Syria has barred most international media, making it hard to verify accounts from activists and authorities.
Friday's violence prompted Arab ministers to issue their strongest call yet on Assad to end the killing of civilians.
Arab ministers are due to meet Syrian officials to press for dialogue between the government and opposition
