Having conditioned abs is important for unarmed combat and sparring. It's different than just doing a bunch of situps, you need to learn how to time your breath with each attack. You must be very careful not to push yourself too hard in this sort of training, as you can injure yourself very seriously. The great magician Houdini actually died from taking a very hard hit to the stomach while not being properly prepared. If your ego gets in the way, and you are doing it to show off to people, then you're asking for trouble. If the person hits too high or too low too hard, you can be seriously injured. But if this training is done properly, it can enhance your ability to perform at a high level in sparring.

Also those that think that they are great Martial Artists because they can take a hard hit actually it is not a great feat at all, because to be a great Martial Artist, it means you don't get hit at all! Ab hardening conditioning for combat is just a part of the overall training that is required for Martial Artists, but no Martial Artist should be obsessed with it. Ideally Martial Artists should train to be perfect in not being hit.
