Diane von Furstenberg created a Spring 2013 collection fit for a royal-on-the-go at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York - drawing on her travels with her first husband - the late Prince Egon von Furstenberg - as her inspiration.

"This collection is all about me when I was a young princess in Rome and Egon took me around and made me visit all these things, and so Yvan was very inspired by that and that's how it started."

Creative director Yvan Mispelaere showed palazzo pants, not as wide as the '70s, but loose enough to flow and flatter a woman's shape - a style that Oscar de la Renta says captures von Furstenberg's ability to empower women.

"You know I remember the times when a woman could not wear pants into a restaurant. She was not allowed and all those kind of things, so you know, it's extraordinary what a woman the last 30 years have achieved, you know."

Before the show Valentino said Spring goes "back to beauty."

"Now, fashion goes to beautiful things and I am very happy because in my career, I try to make woman looking beautiful."

"Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker took a more practical approach to Spring when asked what she would be wearing.

"Whatever I can walk my kids to school in."

Von Furstenberg took a final spin down the catwalk, picking up Google co-founder Sergey Brin, wearing Google Glass to video the show and document fashion through a different lens.
