I didn’t ask the mouse
Why he smiled. Dangling
By its legs, inside the cat’s mouth.

Taking those final spasms
Before rigor-mortis sets in.

In the same respect,
I won’t choke on life’s complications
Like I do love.

I am saving my worry
For repentance.

I won’t expose my shallow behavior
As a longing for truth.

My ego asks enough questions
For my honesty.

I didn’t ask the mouse
Why he smiled. Dangling
By its legs, inside the cat’s mouth.

Because I saw the infected wound
On the mouse’s torso. Scabbed over,
Dripping with yellow puss.

The cat swallowed the smile.
And everything that came with it.
