Onze anos após participar das investigações de um caso que acabou com a morte da mulher que amava, Evelyn Mulwray, o detetive Jake Gilttes (Jack Nicholson) é contratado por Jake Berman (Harvey Keitel), que julga que seu sócio é o amante da sua mulher, Kitty Berman (Meg Tilly). Um esquema é armado, mas Berman não segue o combinado e uma arma aparece de algum lugar e o sócio é baleado. Mas para Lillian Bodine (Madeleine Stowe), a esposa da vítima, não é um caso de adultério mas talvez de assassinato a sangue frio.
