"7-billionth" born in Philippines
Description
An exhausted new mom rests with her baby daughter in a Philippine hospital.
Just before midnight on Monday, she gave birth to one of the world's symbolic "7 billionth babies."
The U.N. had forecast the landmark would be reached on Monday.
The baby was welcomed with a cake, a scholarship and a small celebration.
New mom Camille Camacho said her family would take care of her "blessing."
The Philippines is the 12th most populous country in the world.
A U.N. representative on hand said growing populations can bolster economic growth with the proper resources.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED NATIONS RESIDENT COORDINATOR JACQUELINE BADCOCK SAYING:
"Well, the thing is whether you have a large number or a small number, you need to plan for your population, and you need to provide the services that you need to live a productive life. So it is not only for the countries with large population, it is for all countries."
Reproductive health remains a concern in many parts of the developing world.
Here, 10-percent of teens between 15 and 19 are having children and are at increased risk of HIV.
