500,000 Bats - Gainesville, FL

The largest occupied bat houses in the world are located on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. On most calm twilights during the Spring, Summer, and Fall, at least 500,000 bats emerge from their lairs to lay waste to the insect population of Gainesville. It is a challenging site to catch on video, and is best seen in person. Special thanks to the three lovely ladies who told me the best place to stand for filming.
