Description

As many as 30 miners are unaccounted for after an explosion rocked a coal mine on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, the district's mayor said.

The accident happened about 50 km north of the town of Greymouth and around 200 km southwest of the capital Wellington.

"It's not good news at all, they (police) say there are between 25 and 30 miners unaccounted for after a big explosion at the mine," said Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn.

Police said emergency services were on their way to the mine. No other details were immediately available.

The Pike River Coal Co. Ltd mine, which produces hard coking coal used in the steel industry, has been open for around a year and was increasing production after a series of technical problems delayed its development.

The company is around 30 per cent owned by NZ Oil and Gas Ltd with two Indian companies - Gujarat NRE and Saurashtra Fuels - as substantial minority shareholders.
