At least three people have been killed, another 38 are missing after a rain-triggered mudslide engulfed a construction site in southwest China's Sichuan province on Thursday (June 28), state media reported.

The incident happened at 6:14 a.m. local time (2214 GMT - June 27) at the construction site of the Baihetan Hydropower Station in Ningnan county, Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, official Xinhua news agency said.

Preliminary investigations showed that the dead and missing were mostly workers at the power station and their family members, it added.

A group of rescuers rushed to the site to start the search for survivors, Xinhua said.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station, which is currently under construction, belongs to the China Three Gorges Corporation.

A large part of southern and eastern China have been hit by heavy rains in the past few days, causing flooding and mudslides.
