#16 TCU Dominates Southern

FORT WORTH, TX — The 16th-ranked Texas Christian University Horned Frogs opened up their 2018 season against the Southern University Jaguars on Saturday morning from Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. The Jaguars were not prepared to stop or even contain sophomore quarterback Shawn Robinson. The Horned Frogs routed and mauled the Jaguars, 55-7. Robinson accounted for five touchdowns, all in the first half. He finished the game completing 19 of 26 passes for 210 yards and three TD’s while rushing for 45 yards and two more scores. Not a bad way to start your sophomore season.

Southern didn’t stand much of chance, the Horned Frogs jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and never looked back. TCU had excellent field position the entire half largely in part to a combination of their play-making and Southern’s poor special teams play. In addition to the great starting field position for TCU, the Jaguars starting quarterback John Lampley had some costly interceptions that translated to points for TCU. Their lone bright spot for the game was a 55 yard TD catch from Cameron Mackey. To put it into perspective, TCU place kicker Cole Bunce had more points than Southern for the whole game and he didn’t play in the second half.

Penn transfer and fellow sophomore QB, Michael Collins took over in the second half for the Horned Frogs and wasted no time getting in on the scoring, connecting with TreVontae Hights on a 57 yard strike that made it 48-7 in the third. The very next time TCU touched the ball, Derius Davis took a punt 73 yards to the house to up the score to 55-7 and the 16th ranked team in the country would cruise from there.

Overall it was a very balanced offensive attack and defensive clinic for the Horned Frogs, racking up 499 total yards with 264 over the air and 235 on the ground while allowing just 185 total yards and holding their opponent to seven points or less for the seventh time since the start of the 2017 season. Sophomore running back Emari Demercado led the balanced rushing attack with 57 yards on 8 carries. TCU now looks ahead to a highly anticipated matchup under the Friday night lights against former SWC conference rival, the SMU Mustangs on September 7th from Ford Stadium.
